Christmas

My Christmas vacations, lots of Christmas markets with their amazing decorations and food.

Happy New Year!

I wanted to post something epic about the New Year, but I’m running around in panic trying to cook all the hundred dishes I have planned for today.

But I wanted to stop by and wish you all a happy New Year, may your wishes come true and may the coming year bring you love and joy and happiness.

С Новым Годом! Желаю всего самого хорошего в наступающем году, радости, здоровья и счастья )

Bad Endorf, Germany

It’s hard to belive now, but I took these photos this Christmas in Germany. It was pretty cold, don’t let the greeт grass tell you otherwise! Though the color totally depended on the sun – we went out walking sometime in the evening and could observe a very beautiful sunset in the end.

That area is located near Prien au Chiemsee and you can see the Alps pretty much from your backyard. It’s a breathtaking view I must admit, but that part of Germany is in general one of the most beautiful places I’ve been. I wish we drive along the alpine road again this summer when we have a second car trip.

Glass Christmas decorations in Cologne

I already posted few photos of the glass decorations on the Christmas market in Cologne, but now I found a photo of a man who was making them right on the market. It’s a very exciting process, to see how something that beautiful is created.

Surprisingly, I din’t find that huge variety of Christmas decorations in Cologne that I saw in Munich or Berlin in previous years. I wonder if it’s a regional thing, in Cologne markets are full of food and crafts, a lot of crafted things made of wool, leather, paper. You can easily buy a wallet, belt, bag, scarf or even a table cloth there – everything is really beautiful. On the last day of the market most of the sellers make discounts by the way, which is cool )

Christmas markets food

Now seems like the best time to be a bit nostalgic about the food, and the food from the Christmas markets in particular.

We spent 3 days in Cologne, and in those 3 days we didn’t eat anything except for the food from the markets. No restaurants or cafes or take aways.
I can’t say I felt really good after that, but it was totally worth it. I love Christmas markets food, and even if I can’t spell the name of most of it, I will still be missing it over the year.

This is how they make Käse Rösti (something like hash browns with melted cheese on top).
The cheese piece is cut in half and it’s being melted under a heater. When the Rösti is ready, they cut the upper layer of the melted cheese with a knife into a pan, sprinkle it with some nutmeg and serve it like that. So far it’s one of the most unhealthy and tasty at the same time thing I’ve ever had.

Fried meat, Russians would call it шашлык, but I have no idea how to name it in English, according to my Irish boss at work it’s not a common thing in Ireland at all. Basically it’s a marinated pork fried on the open fire on a stick.

Amsterdam – channels and boats

What I love in Amsterdam is the architecture, and the channels. And the boats of course. And their big swimming houses docked near the quiet streets. And their bicycles, the ones with the very low frames, comfortable seats, wide handlebars. I even love the flower baskets they put on the front of the bicycle, it doesn’t make them look provincial, especially when there is a very angry and aggressive person in a business suit driving it.

I also love poffertjes in a sugar powder and the evening lights in the streets far from the city center. But I will talk about that some other time with photos, of course.

This time I wanted to post few pictures of the boats I met on my way when I took a boat cruise. The weather was not so good, clouds and even some rain, but I managed to take few photos.

The house on the last photo is not actually a boat, its a swimming house, and I wonder if it can be moved to the other location by the channel. Some time I will definitely stay in one of those, it must be so unbelievable cool to fall asleep there…

You can find my first post about the last Christmas vacation in Amsterdam here.
